An automatic sliding glass door is a glass entrance driven by a motorised operator in the header. It slides the panels sideways when a sensor detects someone approaching and closes them once the doorway is clear. For shops, clinics, offices and malls in Dubai it is the default choice, because it handles heavy footfall without swinging into anyone’s path.
How does an automatic sliding door work?
The automatic sliding door mechanism sits in a header box above the opening and has four main parts:
- Operator: an electric motor and gearbox that drive a toothed belt.
- Carriages and track: the glass panels hang from roller carriages that run along an aluminium track, guided at the bottom by a floor guide.
- Control unit: sets opening speed, closing speed, hold-open time and operating mode, usually from a programme switch.
- Sensors: an activation sensor (typically microwave radar) that opens the door when someone approaches, and presence or safety sensors (typically active infrared) that stop the door closing on anyone standing in the threshold.
Which configuration do you need?
- Single-slide: one moving panel and one fixed panel. Good for narrower entrances and internal doors.
- Bi-parting: two panels opening from the centre. The standard for shop fronts and building entrances.
- Telescopic: two or more panels per side that stack behind each other, giving a wider clear opening where side space is short. See our guide to telescopic doors.
Framed or frameless glass?
Framed doors set the glass in aluminium sections. They are robust, easier to fit with seals and locks, and suit high-traffic and external entrances. Frameless doors clamp toughened glass at the top and bottom only, giving a cleaner, more open look for showrooms, offices and internal partitions. Whichever you choose, door glass should be toughened safety glass, and laminated glass is worth considering where security matters.
Sensors, access control and opening modes
Most commercial doors run in at least three modes from the programme switch: automatic (opens for anyone), exit only (opens from inside, for closing time) and locked. On top of that, doors can be linked to card readers, keypads, push buttons, remote controls and fire alarm systems, so they open for authorised people only, or stay open in an emergency.
In Dubai’s heat, the hold-open time matters more than people expect. A door that stays open several seconds too long lets cool air out on every cycle. Set it short, and use a sensor field shaped to people walking towards the door rather than passing it.
Safety standards to ask about
The reference standard for powered pedestrian doors is EN 16005, covering safety sensors, opening forces and protection against people being struck or trapped. It is widely used as the benchmark for automatic entrances in the UAE, and it expects powered doors to be serviced at least once a year. Ask any installer which safety sensors are included and how the door is tested at handover.
Can you automate an existing sliding glass door?
Often, yes. If the existing glass panels, frame and header are sound, an operator, track and sensors can be added to make a manual sliding door automatic. If the glass is not toughened, the panels are too heavy for the available header, or the frame is damaged, a new system is the safer choice. SmartFix inspects the entrance before recommending either route. Homeowners can read more in our guide to automatic doors for villas and homes.
Keeping the door running
Most faults come back to sensors that need cleaning or recalibrating, sand in the floor guide, and worn rollers or belts. A short service visit catches these before the door fails at the busiest time of day. If your door is already misbehaving, see our troubleshooting guide or book our automatic door repair service.
What affects the price of an automatic sliding glass door?
Opening width and height, single, bi-parting or telescopic layout, framed or frameless glass, glass specification, the operator brand and duty rating, sensors, access control, and any building or electrical work needed above the opening. SmartFix quotes after a site survey.

Frequently asked questions
Are automatic sliding glass doors safe?
Yes, when they are fitted with safety sensors and set up correctly. Presence sensors stop the door closing on anyone in the threshold, and opening forces are limited. EN 16005 is the reference safety standard, and it expects powered doors to be serviced at least once a year.
What happens to an automatic door during a power cut?
It depends on the operator. Many commercial operators offer an optional battery backup that opens or closes the door when mains power fails, and most can be pushed open by hand once the motor is unpowered. Ask which option suits your building and fire strategy before ordering.
How often should an automatic sliding door be serviced?
At least once a year, and more often for busy entrances such as malls, supermarkets and clinics. A service should include cleaning and testing the sensors, checking rollers, belt and floor guide, and confirming the safety reversing works.
Which brands of automatic door operator are common in Dubai?
European operators such as GEZE and dormakaba (Dorma) are widely used in Dubai malls, retail and office buildings, alongside other brands. SmartFix installs, services and repairs systems including GEZE, Dorma and Kematic.
Does SmartFix install automatic sliding glass doors in Dubai?
